Join Me for a Demo of Ontario’s Crop Protection Hub at CGC this week!

Going to the Canadian Greenhouse Conference this week? Still unfamiliar with Ontario’s Crop Protection Hub (fondly referred to as “Crop Hub”) and want to know more about it?

Then join me both days of the conference from 12-1:30 at the OMAFA booth if you want a live, one-on-one demo!

This user-friendly tool helps you look up things like:

  • Quick access to rates and REIs of floriculture pest-control products
  • Current efficacies of pesticides and fungicides to Ontario pests
  • Compatibility of chemical products with natural enemies
  • Quick link to the legal label

Keep reading to see other new features of the Greenhouse Floriculture module in Crop Hub that can also be demonstrated on Wednesday and Thursday! Note that this demo is applicable to floriculture, vegetable and nursery crop growers, as the Greenhouse Vegetable module will be going LIVE at CGC and a Nursery and Landscape module is slated for Spring.

See you all at CGC!

Making it Easier to Compare Products

When you complete a crop protection search for a particular crop in Crop Hub, you will land on product results in the “Grid view” format, as usual.

Grid view shows all products registered for use in that crop. If you click on the “efficacy” button at the bottom of each “baseball card” (as I like to call them), you’ll see a quick snapshot of the efficacy of that product against all registered pests (if you haven’t selected a pest), or just one pest (if you select on from the list). Clicking on “Details” gives you all information regarding the product, including the rate for each pest and a link the label.

We have now added a “List view” and “Efficacy view” to the site to quickly view and compare additional information.

There are instructions below explaining how you can use the new “List view” and “Efficacy view.”

List View

The “List view” allows you to review rate information, REIs, product restrictions and efficacy data for all products against a particular pest all in one place. It can also be easily printed. To access the “List view” for a specific crop, first complete a crop protection search for the desired crop. From the “Grid view” page, you can access the “List view” by:

  1. Selecting a pest using the “Select pest(s)” search bar on the right-hand side of the page in “Grid view.” Please note that only one pest can be selected to access the list view.
  2. Clicking “List view” from the three tabs underneath the main crop heading in “Grid view.”
  3. To print this page, click the “Print view” button in the top right corner and this should pull up your browser’s print function and allow you to print the page.

Depending on your browser’s print settings, you may need to alter the scale of the page. A scale of 60% tends to work well

Note: in List View, you may see multiple entries under rate and efficacy. This corresponds to different rates for different application types, e.g. foliar versus drench. The first rate given in the rate column will match up to the first efficacy rating in the Efficacy column.

(Sorry this is weird, but greenhouse crops are special and weird!).

Efficacy View

The efficacy view allows you to compare the efficacy of available products in controlling pests. To access the “Efficacy view” for a specific crop, first complete a crop protection search for the desired crop. From the “Grid view” page, you can access the “Efficacy view” by:

  1. Selecting at least one pest using the “Select pest(s)” search bar on the right-hand side of the page in “Grid view.” A maximum of 10 pests can be selected at once.
  2. Once you have selected up to 10 pests, click the “Efficacy view” tab from the three tabs underneath the main crop heading.
  3. To print this page, click the “Print view” button in the top right corner and this should pull up your browser’s print function and allow you to print the page.

A rating of 3-4 translates to high efficacy of the product, where 1-2 is suppression or fair control. A dash indicates information may not be available yet (or data entry has not been completed – the greenhouse floriculture module for fungicides, specifically, is still a work in progress, so don’t come for me yet!).

Note: depending on your browser’s print settings, you may need to alter the scale of the page. A scale of 60% tends to work well.
